Golf, race or walk for Water Equation at ACE25 in Denver

The Water Equation is elevating investment in future water workers and underserved communities through multiple events before and during the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE25) in Denver in June.

The 6th Annual WE Walk, an eight-week virtual walk, is already in progress and welcoming participants. The event, which runs April 1-May 24, fundraises for water operator scholarships and young professional leadership programs.

WE Race for Water 5K will begin at 7 a.m. on June 8 at Sculpture Park in Denver. Last year’s race raised $6,163 for Community Engineering Corps, which matches skilled volunteers with underserved communities to support better infrastructure.

The WE ACE Golf Tournament also tees off June 8 at Denver City Park with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. This year’s event includes breakfast, lunch and an awards presentation. The winners of the tournament will receive a $100 credit to the pro shop. Awards will also be presented to the winners of a longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contest. Last year, the golf outing raised $27,090 for the Singer Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding graduate students pursuing research on topics related to drinking water quality, environmental science, and public health.

Overseeing the planning of these events is Margo Hatton, senior manager of development and donor relations for Water Equation, who joined AWWA in January 2025.

For Hatton, this marks a return to the water sector. She started her career as a fundraiser for the Arkansas River Walk of Pueblo, an urban in-fill development project. From there, she worked in aerospace education funding.

“I think it’s going to be a beautiful day on the golf course,” Hatton said. “The Denver City Park folks have pulled out all the stops to make that a real special day. WE Race is just a lot of fun with a lot of people coming out to be outside. Sculpture Park is going to be beautiful. I think it’ll be a day of getting together with your colleagues and friends to support Water Equation and the programs we offer.”

WE provides funding for workforce advancements, scholarships, students, young professionals and Community Engineering Corps. It is committed to fulfilling the critical need to ensure that the water sector has the necessary workforce to provide clean and safe water to communities in North America.

In all, WE funds 50 water operator scholarships and manages 28 scholarships, including the following five which are AWWA funded:
