Poster Competitions Overview
Participating in these competitions is a fantastic way to enhance your presentation skills, share your knowledge, and connect with professionals in the water community. Use the AWWA Call for Abstracts page to keep up with deadlines and submission details for any of AWWA’s conferences.
ACE (Annual Conference & Expo)
- When: June
- Who: Students and Young Professionals (YPs) who have competed and won at their local Section conference.
- Benefits: Travel expenses and full ACE registration paid for participants.
- Details: Participants compete for first, second, or third place titles at ACE. This is a great opportunity to showcase your research and network with industry professionals.
- Prizes: 1st Place cash prize, 1st – 3rd Place receive ribbons and are publicized on AWWA website, newsletters and social media.
- Questions – To find out if your local Section has a competition and how to enter, find your local Section contact information here or email students@awwa.org for more details.
WQTC (Water Quality & Technology Conference)
- When: Late Fall
- Who: Water quality professionals & students around the world!
- Submission: Abstracts for posters can be submitted during the open call, typically starting in December of the prior year.
- Details: This conference provides a practical forum for exchanging the latest research and information in water technology. Occasionally, there may be a late-breaking call for student posters, so keep an eye on the Call for Abstracts page.
- Prizes: 1st Place cash prize, 1st – 3rd Place receive ribbons and are publicized on AWWA website, newsletters and social media.
- Questions: Email students@awwa.org for more details.
WSI (WaterSmart Innovations Conference)
- When: Early Fall
- Who: Students focused on water conservation and sustainability.
- Topics: Includes advancing efficient projects or research on affordability and equitability, One Water, integrated water management, infrastructure resilience, GIS and Water Conservations, Water Loss and Planning, Energy Nexus, Climate Variability, Environmentally Responsible Water Projects, Drought Management, and more. Full list of topics will be displayed in the call for abstracts.
- Submission: Abstracts generally open in November.
- Details: This conference is dedicated to protecting and conserving water, with a strong focus on student networking and presenting innovative solutions.
- Prizes: 1st Place cash prize, 1st – 3rd Place receive ribbons and are publicized on AWWA website, newsletters and social media.
- Questions – Email students@awwa.org for more details.
Things to Know
- Deadlines and Information: Use the AWWA Call for Abstracts page to keep up with deadlines and submission details for any of AWWA’s conferences.
- Poster Printing: Presenters are responsible for printing their own posters. Make sure to refer to the provided specifications before printing to ensure your poster meets the required standards.
- Group Posters: If a group has worked on a poster, you must select one presenter for the competition. The presenter must be a current student at the time of submission and will be awarded the cash prize if won.
- Acceptance: Upon acceptance of your poster, AWWA staff will contact you with further instructions. This will include details on how to prepare and present your poster at the conference.
Poster Requirements for AWWA Poster Competitions
Poster REQUIREMENTS:
- Size –4 ft (48-inches) wide by 3 ft (36 inches) high
- Title banner – Include a title banner that is ~4-foot-long and large enough to contain the title of the poster, author(s) and employer(s)
- Graphs and figures must be drawn with a minimum line width of 1 mm
- Photos should be 4 in. x 6 in. or larger (large enough to see 6 feet away)
- Must include a clearly and concisely stated objective section
- Must bring printed poster to ACE (check with AWWA on location & day/time to set poster up)
Poster Recommendations:
- Include introduction/objectives, methods, results, conclusion, etc. sections
- Results should be the major portion of the poster
- Text font and size make a great difference in readability, so suggested sizes include:
- Poster title: 80-150 pts (bold recommended)
- Author name(s): 54-60 pts
- Headings: 36-40 pts
- Body text: 24-32 pts
- Figure captions: 18 pts (DO NOT use less than 18 pt font)
- Poster will be pinned to poster stands covered in cloth which can be either blue/gray or brown in color

Student Member Policy
- A degree-seeking individual attending an accredited educational institution enrolled in the number of hours required by the institution for half-time or full-time status.
- A student Membership will be capped at six years, followed by a gradual and defined transition plan to Individual Membership.
- An Individual Member of any other class may convert to Student Membership if he/she meets the enrollment eligibility requirements.
- A Student Member shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges approved by the Board of Directors for this membership classification.
Student Mentorship Program
Join AWWA in this new experience where students and industry leaders are paired to take engagement integration one step further within the community that AWWA is. Students have the opportunity to build a relationship with a water industry expert while exploring careers in water and association engagement.
Commitment:
Students & Mentors are paired at the beginning of each session with the intention to accomplish a set goal that they set as a team. Whether that goal is to learn more about various careers in water, improve upon a skill, figure out what skill you want to add to your resume, further your knowledge about a particular topic in water, or whatever, you will meet at least once a month to gain guidance from you mentor to accomplish that goal.
Requirements:
- Must be an active student from a University/College/Community College
- Must be an AWWA Student Member by the beginning of the program
